Just purchased: Beck - HOB 9/25/05 Tom Jones - HOB 11/25/05 Up and coming: Porcupine Tree with special guest Robert Fripp - HOB 10/9/05 Jethro Tull - State Theatre 11/23/05 I'm practicing my stoic look and meditative non-breathing stance for Mr. Fripp. Better run out for a new pair of lacey panties for Tom Jones --- we're sitting in the balcony so I'd better get my swinging arm in shape. Maybe Mr. Fripp would like some too. Hmmm....

Solas at the Beachland Ballroom 3-15-06. If you like Irish music, they are definitely one of the best. www.solasmusic.comThanks for the tip, Marcus!! I love the Beachland, it's a great venue to see any show. The California Guitar Trio are coming there towards the end of February, it's a show that can't be missed! You play the guitar, Marcus, you'd love them. Let's hope the Beachland stays healthy and that the HOB doesn't put them out of business!

Tim O'Brien @ Kent State 4-8-06 Tim has a long history of making great music & Saturday definitely did nothing to change that. The Kent stage is definitely becoming my favorite venue for many reasons but mainly for who they bring in. I haven't seen a bad show there yet. Ok back to Saturday. I became familiar with him from his release of The Two Journeys, a collection of Irish music. He started out playing alot of "old time" music in his first set, sorry can't remember all of the specifics, he effortlessly switched from guitar, fiddle, & bazouki, which he said was Greek for out of tune, while being backed by a very solid fiddle & big bass. Another thing I can remember from the first set was that he played "The Republican Blues" a funny number especially if you do not like alot of current events, "vote away those blues, republican blues". Also surprising because you know how the Dixie Chicks got treated after what they said. But the first set was filled with great music and a couple of good West Virginia (where he is from) jokes like "How do you know the toothbrush was invented in WV? Cause anywhere else it would be called a teeth brush". The second set he left up for the audience to write their requests on a paper he put out during break. Dylan's Senor was very solid. My personal highlight was hearing Mick Ryan's Lament from The Two Journeys. A song of two brothers who left Ireland in 1848, one dies at Vicksburg & the other, Mick, dies at Little Bighorn. There are still alot more of him I do not know, but I will be making more purchases of his solo stuff as well as his stuff from the great bluegrass band Hot Rize. Wish I'd written the setlist, but oh well maybe next time. But If you're into bluegrass & traditional Irish/American folk music, check him out if you have the chance. Great singer & great instrumentalist. Sorry aboout my spelling, spell check doesn't work on Macs & I'm sneaking to write this at work. Some recommendations: Tim O'Brien: The Crossing The Two Journeys Traveler Red on Blonde (His versions of Dylan Songs) Fiddler's Green (won a Grammy for this at this years awards for best folk album) www.timobrien.neta couple of free downloads: www.timobrien.net/download.cfm

Great review Marcus, thanks for posting it!! I'm sorry I missed that show, sounds like a really great time. I love it when folk singers sing those ballads that reflect an historical event, I'll have to try to find Lament from the Two Journeys. LOL on the West Virginy joke! ;-) The Kent Stage is a nice little place to see a show. RJ and I have only seen two shows there thus far --- Richard Thompson (and we saw you there!) and Martin Barre. Not really a bad seat in the place, you have to love those old theatres. I know one of the owners and know that he tries to get as many good acoustic acts in there as he can. Getting RT was a real coup and the event of a lifetime for this guy. Do you write music on your Mac?

our Piano player has been experimenting with recording on them, I use the one I have at work for this & work. I don't have a cpu at home cause I'm on one for most of the day & it's the last thing I want to see when I get home for the most part. As far as writing I usually do that the old fashioned way. I usually come up with a melody sittin around pickin & then try to write a story around it and alot of times its the other way around, you never know when inspiration hits. I have seen Nickel Creek, Sam Bush, RT, & TO'B there, and I would recommend them all to anybody, but I love the place for the same reasons you said as well as most of these bands have nowhere else to play near Cleveland. By the way the Tim O'B show I guess will be rewebcasted Friday & Sat on www.folkalley.com, or so they said.
