RJ and I picked up a great little dvd boxed set yesterday. The Val Lewton Horror Collection gathers together some of the best horror/suspense films of the early 1940's. Lewton was a master at capturing suspense via camera angles, shadows and good storylines. He is the grandfather of horror and tackled subjects like voodoo, spirit possession and devil worship with cleverness and class. This dandy collection includes these great little noir films:
Cat People (yes, the original!) Curse of the Cat People I Walked with a Zombie The Body Snatcher Isle of the Dead Bedlam Leopard Man The Ghost Ship The Seventh Victim
Also included is a documentary about Lewton and his work titled Shadows in the Dark.
Truly a great little package for classic film fans and one that brings back memories of on-the-edge-of-my-seat Friday late night movie viewings.

A great dvd set! It just shows that it is possible to make scary movies without gratuitious sex or violence (not that there is anything wrong with that ). Sometimes I wish the filmmakers of today would pay attention to how things were done in the past. Technology is great and the special effects today are impressive--but in too many movies today that is all there is. What happened to the story? Or the characters?
