I tried to vote, but I couldn't figure it out. I hit submit vote and it voted Ahab for me. Next time I'll figure it out. Wow that's strange! You should be able to just click for the one you want in the little circle. Maybe for some reason something you have loaded on your pc is blocking the choices. I dunno! It wasn't fixed, really.

It's probably my fault.

Well, the winter storm is on it's way and we're getting ready to hold up here, make chili and maybe a nice rice noodle salad whilst lounging in our fleece wear. What a great day to sit around and read about Ahab's Wife!
Have you started it yet? If so, how do you like it?

What a great day to sit around and read about Ahab's Wife! Have you started it yet? If so, how do you like it? 100 pages into it and enjoying. Unfortunately a harsh travel week took its toll on my ability to sleep, so sleeping rather than reading on planes took priority. Thus, I am not as far along as I had anticipated. MQ

I'm enjoying the book as well, Max. In fact, I'm not that far into it and it's already very hard to put down. She's an excellent writer, I love her descriptions and choice of words. A wonderful choice for this, to be sure.

I'm zero pages into the book so far. Unfortunately a situation with my family intruded last week which has put me behind on things. Also, I have my library book discussion tomorrow (Monday) and I had to finish that book first. We are doing Kate Remembered by A. Scott Berg. It is a biography of sorts about Katharine Hepburn. Actually turned out to be an interesting book. She was definitely one of a kind and saw it all. I remember spending many a night watching old movies on tv with my mom growing up. It was interesting hearing her comments on many of my favorite movies and actors from the past. I plan on starting Ahab's Wife tomorrow. I am a fast reader so I should be able to catch up to the rest of you.

Okay, so I got the book today from the library (happy Annette?) and I looked at it with some trepidation. You see I'm such a HOPELESS science and sci fi geek that this could be, well, hopeless.
That said, the first sentence is catchy, so I'll give it a go. I don't promise anything, though. You have to remember, I'm a guy who settles his mind at night pondering gravitational relativity, and reads physics thought problems for fun.

Good for you for trying!! And for going to the library. So far I find it a beautifully descriptive story. Oh, and there's goats. I love goats.

[quote author=Shutter Girl Oh, and there's goats. I love goats. [/quote] Goats. Hmmm..... Laser shoot 'em up heart pounding page turning space opera, or... goats. It's going to be a tough choice.

Well, I gave it the ol' college try.
Would you believe a high school try?
How 'bout preschool?
OK. I gave it 10 pages. Well, 7 pages.
Call me an ignoramus. Call me what you will. I'm going back to my other book, Passages by Connie Willis.
This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where the guys take a bet on how long it would take for them not to masturbate. That night Kramer comes in, slaps the money on the table, and says, "I lose!"

LOL Stu!! ;D Well, thanks for trying nonetheless! It is a bit of a tome and if you're not into that sort of literature it might look like a death sentence. We all have different reading tastes. My reading tastes vary depending on my mood, what looks good at whatever time, etc. I love Rosenberg's Law of Reading: Never apologize for your reading tastes. How's the Connie Willis? Time travel?

7 pages Well, I am at the 150 page mark and am really enjoying it. I think it is very well written and brings up some interesting ideas. I look forward to discussing them after we finish. Don't want to give anything away

7 pages \ Well, okay, maybe it was 8 pages. I put it down when the woman under the bed started rubbing breasts with the narrator when she was in labor with Ahab's kid. I wasn't in the mood. Sorry!

Being in the right mood does make a big difference. At least we got you to go to the library for it All we ask is that everyone who wants to participate at least give it an honest try. I have two rules to live by: Life is too short to read a book you really don't like. And never drink cheap beer ;D

Did you see that Budweiser is coming out with a caffeinated beer? Ick. I freely admit that I didn't give it an honest try. Usually I'll give a book 100 pages before I'll dump it--more for some (like Dune). But I just wasn't in the mood. Maybe I shouldn't have started it in a ski cabin full of drunk guys playing wargames on the computer and watching action videos.
