Stu's earlier post got me thinking of reading some more SciFi and Fantasy books. Then I realized why I have not been reading them nearly as much anymore. It is because there is rarely a stand alone novel anymore in either genre. Everything is part of a series. When I was younger it was not a concern, but now time is an issue for me. There are just too many books I want to read right now and more come out every year. What is a person to do? SciFi and Fantasy are not the only genres to have series. Mystery is full of them as well as suspense.
What does everyone else think? Are series something you like to read or do you avoid like the plague?
That said I can say that some of my most enjoyable reading experiences has been with series fiction and I still keep my eye out for new volumes in several series. Some past and still current faves:
Lord of the Rings--Tolkien Conan the Barbarian--Robert E. Howard John Carter of Mars--Edgar Rice Burroughs Repairman Jack--F. Paul Wilson Gideon Oliver (the Skeleton Detective)--Aaron Elkins Disc World--Terry Pratchett Shannara--Terry Brooks Chronicles of Thomas Covenant--Stephen Donaldson Windrose Chronicles--Barbara Hambly
Wow, this is embarassing. Off of the top of my head I can probably list at list a dozen more series that I really enjoyed. Does anyone else out there have any faves to share?

The early Shannara books rock, but the later ones get progressively worse. Brooks has gotten lazy. That or it's being ghost written. Now to answer the question: Love series--I like following a good character through a slew of adventures. Some series that I've enjoyed:
Elric of Melibourne--Moorcock Nero Wolfe--Rex Stout (mysteries, but worth it) The Black Company--Glen Cook Song of Fire & Ice--George R. Martin The Dark Tower--King Drenai Tales--David Gemmell
These are off the top of my head, and RepairmanJack already hit a lot of other ones I'd name.

Have you seen the Mystery! series about the Brother Cadfael stories? And/or Master and Commander? How are they compared to the books do you think?

I have seen neither, but would like to at some point. Is Cadfael still gracing the airwaves? MQ No, but I really wish they would either bring them back or start a fresh batch. I love Scott Jacobi and he does a great Cadfael, I think. If you're at all interested in the southwest or the Navajo then I recommend the Mystery! series of Tony Hillerman novels that include Thief of Time and Skinwalkers. Both of these sets are available on dvd and you should be able to get them at your local library.
