Tonight will be the first of my farewell social events in Doha, spending an evening out with a couple colleagues and a couple client staff. Seems we have gotten in the habit of a weekly gathering - trying to meet in establishments that offer a trinity (food, alcohol, and shisha). The Diplomatic Club, nestled in the western portion of Doha Bay, across from which one of the latest man-made island communities (The Pearl) is being built, has served as our most frequent destination. Too hot and humid to be outside under the stars tonight, so inside Al Sayyad restaurant we will go.
Shisha - or hubbly-bubbly - or hookah - or narghile. Take your pick of names. The regional favorite flavor of tobacco is double apple or two apple. Lately I have been indulging with mint. Perhaps I'll try rose tonight, if available.
Never having had any smoke (and I mean any smoke) pass my lips until being in this region, I am unfortunately finding it a pleasant vice, though the frequency remains low and the vice is dropped once I head back to the good old U.S. of A.
In the region it is a wonderfully social event - leisurely evenings, often outside experiencing breezes off the Gulf, with a variety of mezze and abundant conversation. Such evenings are among the most relaxing here - some of the most comfortable.
Hard to justify while wearing my physician hat, but that is how life is sometimes, isn't it?
