Shutter Girl and I went out to dinner last night to one of our favorite Brew pubs called The Brewkettle. They let you make your own beer there with their recipes if you want (several friends have done it and the beer is really good) or you can eat or drink in the restaurant side. They have 21 beers on tap of which usually 6-8 are their beers and the rest are a unique selection. Plus they continually rotate them so you can try things I have never seen on tap before.
Last night I had Bluebird Bitter which they say is an awardwinning bitter from the UK. I say it is damn good. It comes honey colored and cloudy in the glass with a thin white head. A definite honey aroma to the nose is present. Very smooth with a dry finish and honey taste. It actually really reminds me of drinking mead. I have to get back there to have some more before it goes away. I give it 4.5/5 stars.
I also tried De Dolle Stille Nacht which translates to Silent night. This is a seasonal strong Belgian ale. I emphasize the strong part. If you do not like Belgian beers than I suggest you pass on this one. It came in a 1/4 pint glass and is 12% alcohol. Not a chugging beer to be sure. It took me awhile to drink and like most Belgians it grew on me as I went. Not for the faint of heart--I give it 4/5 stars.

Bluebird was an excellent brew to be sure! It tasted almost exactly like meade to me. yum yum yum!! It's made in the Oxford region in Britain. Perhaps a certain someone I know from there would be willing to grace us with a few bottles.

When I first went to Europe I spent a week at the home of my make up artist's 77 year old aunt Marta in Antwerp, Belgium. We photographed her upstairs neighbor's daughter and as a thank you they threw a dinner in our honour. Liquor was served. When I commented on how good the beer was, the father said "If you think that was good check this out, and brought out another kind of beer. This happened five times. On the sixth time that I commented on how good it was, he opened his beer cabinant and lined up literally 21 different bottles of beer for me to choose from! I was already three sheets to the wind. After that he started with the rums. By the end of the night I coiuld barely walk down the stairs to crash! Belgians are very nice people and they are highly artistic when they drink!

Great story, Kram! Those Belgians know how to make beer! We like to watch a cable show called The Thirsty Traveler. This fellow goes around the world to taste, well, booze. He did a great show on Belgium and made the brews sound fascinating. Some of these recipes are centuries old! Unfortunately, I'm highly allergic to Belgians but I try to taste Joe's when he orders them. They certainly have a distinct taste. If you haven't tried Ommegang brews you really must. They're brewed in Cooperstown, NY with an old time Belgian recipe in mind. They're strong and large, a real work out! They even have cave aged beers. Imagine listening to TL's In the Caves of the Iron Mountain cd whilst drinking one of these. hmm........ p.s. That fellow must have been really hardcore! It's amazing you walked out of there alive!

That was a good story Kram! I can not imagine drinking that much Belgian beer Ommegang does make good beers. Another brewery that does the Belgian style I really like is Unibroue out of Quebec. Most of their beers come in 750 ml corked bottles. Very tasty.

The other night I tried two beers from Left Hand Brewing. They are out of Colorado. I had the Milk Stout and the Sawtooth Ale. I loved both of them! I had quite a bit else to drink that night so my full review will have to wait for another time. I have to see if my local beer store carries them--I had them when we went out for dinner. I would definitely recommend them.

On Monday I went to a local drinkery with Repairman and TriKrona to watch opening day. It was a lot of fun but we paid more attention to the NTN trivia game we were playing instead of the baseball games! RJ tried an Indian brew called Maharaja. We're trying to remember whether it was a pale ale or a lager! I guess it could have passed for both. It was light in color and bubbling in texture with a distinct peach taste. I enjoy apricot beers and I liked this one, too! It was a nice surprise on the tongue when that peach flavor came through. I bet it would be great with a hot plate of palaak paneer. MMMMmmm....
