I know we all like our beer--but what about liquor? Personally I am not into wine, although my wife has introduced me to some that I do like. My days of doing shots are long past. Also for me mixing between beer and liquor is not a good thing. I do like to indulge in a good single malt scotch. Like tonight--we went out to dinner and had a few Fosters on draft. When we got home I did not feel like any more beer, but a nice glass of Glennfiddich Solera Reserve really hit the spot. It is aged 15 years in oak, sherry, and bourbon casks. Damn it is good. I also enjoy a nice cognac or irish whiskey. I believe in something I can sip straight up that warms the palate and goes down smooth.
Anyone else out there have a favorite liqour or mixed drink they like?

I have to say that I'm a whiskey gal myself! I love a good homemade whiskey sour and also drinking whiskey straight. Black Bush by Bushmill is particularly nice. Once we were at an Irish pub and we asked for Black Bush and the bartender was going to put it on the rocks. Blasphemy! A good cognac or apricot brandy is another libation I enjoy.

Last night we went to the Fox and Hound pub for dinner and drinks. There was a little placard that advertised "Turkey Balls" -- 2 marischino cherries soaked in Wild Turkey bourbon. I asked the waitress how they were and she said, 'they're awesome' or some such.
Now, I've never had Wild Turkey but I have had Rare Breed which, at $27.95 a bottle, is pretty tasty. Anyway, the two cherries arrived at the table and I bravely picked up one stem and plopped a whole boozy cherry in my mouth. There was an explosion of taste as I realized that it tasted exactly like the strongest cough medicine that I've ever had! Not knowing what to do next, I took a huge gulp of my Newcastle in hopes of washing away the pain. Not bad with an ale chaser! But folks, don't try it at home. Not recommended.
I left the remaining cherry in the glass. Good thing they were only 2 for a $1.00! Those are some cheap balls.

Last week, while in Newport Beach, California, I had a delicious meal at a restaurant located in Fashion Island, very close to my hotel. Blue Coral is the restaurant, an establishment boasting over 60 types of vodka. I tried the "world class" flight of 3 vodkas (3 one-ounce servings). Unfortunately I did not have a pen, so cannot report on which exact vodkas I tasted. I do know one was from Sweden (incredibly good) and another from Poland. Not sure of the third.
I have to admit, I am far from a vodka connoisseur. Thus, for me it was a very interesting experiment in trying to determine differences in taste and sensation for each. Remarkably enough, even this vodka neophyte could recognize vast differences among the three. One unbelievably smooth, soothing, and clean. Another rougher around the edges, with more bite and late burn. Another even rougher around the edges, with a quick burn and late burst of woody taste.
For those that are more experienced, I am sure this amateur report is laughable. It did open my eyes to differences and similarities among different brands of a single type of liquor - a wider range of differences than I ever imagined.

You're report's not laughable Max, thanks for sharing it! I'm not a vodka drinker, seems every time I partake in the stuff I end up regretting it. RJ's sis is a fan though and I think she would have a grand time trying the different brands. Occassionally RJ and I will go somewhere where they offer a whiskey sampler, that's a lot of fun to try, too. I'm no expert taster either, I just know what I like and what I don't like. Tonight we're going to the Brew Kettle, a spot where we took Stubedoo when he was in town. Here's what they currently have on tap: www.thebrewkettle.com/ontap.aspSort of an odd conglomeration but I'm sure we'll find something in there to like! It's a fun place to go, especially with our pal Ben who knows the employees there as well as we do.

Thanks for the report MQ! I am not a vodka fan myself, but it is good to hear your review. Samplers can be fun Tonight I did try the Sierra Nevada Rauchbier. Very tasty I must say. It is a smoke beer if you did not guess by the name. Rather mild for a smoke beer. Unlike the german ones this does not overpower the palate. It brings back memories of sitting in front of a campfire. Probably not for the casual beer drinker, but definitely worth a try for the beer connoisseur ;D
