Well, another St. Patty's Day is here and this of course means that I'll be listening to some Irish tunage today!
There have been some great bands from Ireland, both those who play traditional music and others who have become famous in the rock or pop fields.
Who are your favorite bands/artists from the Emerald Isle?
Here are mine:
Altan - The consumate traditional Irish band, Altan offers fine musicianship with fiddles and Gaelic lyrics galore. Irish is the first language of lead singer/fiddler Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. She's an ethereal vision with her glowing red hair and silky stage presence. We had the pleasure of seeing them live for a rare American tour a few years ago. It doesn't get much better than this, folks. Visit their website:

U2 - Well, duh... No Irish rock band captures the revolutionary spirit quite like U2, they've almost singlehandedly put Ireland on the map of rock history. Plus, The Edge rawks!
Horslips - A great prog/flute band, Horslips brings combines great lyrics and music together with wonderful playing and singing to make a wonderfully cohesive package. Thanks for turning me onto them, Max.
Some cool American bands that play Irish music:
Tempest - Their lead singer happens to be Norwegian but he can play and sing Celtic with the best of them! And despite his tall frame, he's very light on your lap.
The Fenians - These California boys play Irish party and revolutionary songs with spirit. And they played Loco Breath live here, you can't beat that.
Brigid's Cross - If you're into music and you live around here then you've surely heard of Cleveland's most famous (and best!) Irish band. The three piece ensamble plays to sell out crowds all over the midwest, they make you want to sing loud!
Tonight we're going to celebrate the wearin' o'the green by watching two of our fave 'Irish' films, The Matchmaker and The Commitments. What do you think of that, Jimmy? ;D
