One gripe - why insist on having "bonus tracks" with time gaps? Especially hated when the time gap is at the end of a track, so that putting that song on a compilation or your iPod becomes a pain - or you have to just put up with silence for an extended period. One reason I get frustrated as I listen to Dot Com. I'd love to share a A Gift of Roses with other folks, but... One of the worst offenders has been Cracker - who has one disc with 90+ tracks, 80 of which are silent tracks a few seconds in length - with some bonus tracks buried within. Frustrating as hell. MQ I agree with you, Max! Also, albums that have songs that run together can make creating a sampler cd for someone a real pain in the arse. Thanks for the Deadwing review, I can hardly wait! I believe I read that the NIN cd had a good review in Entertainment Weekly. And I see there's a new Perfect Circle cd out that I don't have, either.

Those sound interesting, Preston! Are they all British groups? I'm not sure how prevalent flute bands are here. Dead Soul Tribe sounds like it might be interesting!
Is that a new Levon Helm, Cog?
Today I had: The Futureheads (self-titled). Very early-XTC punk!

I can finally talk on Deadwing!
I dig it, it's growing on me! I loved In Absentia so much that probably anything else is bound to be a bit of a disappointment in comparison. Deadwing is enjoyable in and of itself. I like the slide guitar parts and Lazarus makes for a nice single. Shallow reminds me quite a bit of the work of OSI (Office of Strategic Influence), which isn't a surprise because Steven Wilson helped on that album.
Pick up Deadwing -- worth the investment!

Currently listening to...
CGT+2 by the California Guitar Trio
The CGT plus Pat Mastelotto and Tony Levin... how can you go wrong with a combo like that? Slices of King Crimson and Yes with a hint of Segovia make this album a beautiful thing to behold. Such talent and a bunch of nice fellas, too!
Faces by Shawn Phillips
This is Shawn at his very best: Tender, haunting, silly, unforgettable. His voice can make you forget everything and become entwined in his world. I love a number of singer/songwriters but none of them have the effect Shawn has on me when I hear him from his heyday. Gorgeous.
Faces is being re-released in the fall on cd --- can't wait!

I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread since July! One would think I don't listen to any music.... Lately: Side One by Adrian Belew Just can't get enough of this cd! It's like a much-needed shot of sunshine in my weary arm. Oranges and Lemons by XTC One of my fave XTC albums. If you listen very careful to Here Comes President Kill Again you can hear some very familiar drumming by the King of Non-syncopation. Spirit of Radio by Rush I could take or leave Rush until RJ made me a believer!

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan
A brilliant collection of rare and early. The movie captured the energy, chaos, and creativity of the time. This two disc collection gives new insight and further affirmation of Dylan's early genius.
Live at the Gaslight 1962: Bob Dylan
Ditto above
Front Parlour Ballads: Richard Thompson
Acoustic songs in anticipation of an acoustic set with Danny Thompson in two weeks.
Devils and Dust: Bruce Springsteen
Acoustic songs in anticipation of another breathtaking and moving solo performance tomorrow night.
American IV: The Man Comes Around - Johhny Cash
A poignant valedictory by an American music legend. A perfect disc to listen to after seeing Ring of Fire - a Broadway bound musical.

Today I'm going to sit around feeling sorry for myself whilst enjoying:
Cropredy Capers - a lovely 4 disc set and book commemorating 25 years of the Cropredy Festival in jolly old England. Included are bits from all incarnations of Fairport Convention (duh!), Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchins, Ian Anderson and many more.
May your day be filled with great music, too!

Oh yes, folk can be good for the soul. I don't know if it's simplicity or if it's because it's really the roots of todays music but it makes me feel good. It's raw, pure, simple, lovely....

Love Cannot Bear by Robert Fripp I really enjoyed hearing Mr. Fripp's soundscapes live when he opened for Porcupine Tree last month and this album offers a stunning selection of these gorgeous songs. Ethereal, surreal, spiritual... how can you go wrong?? The perfect music for contemplation and putting your mind at ease. Thanks Robert, you're alright.

Aqualung Live, XM Radio broadcast Well, I didn't make it to a show this year but thanks to my lovely nephew Ryan, I did get the freebie cd! Ian doesn't sound half bad! It is sort of missing the excitement of a 'real' live performance, however. Would have been fun to be there to see/hear it, though.

thanks the Tower Records store in Merkaz Azrieli I purchased the above mentioned CD several weeks ago..... it's ok. Not a masterpiece but still a reasonably fresh twist on the old Aqualung theme.

As I lay in the sun by the Arabian Gulf, Wilco's Kicking Television will be the iPod music choice of the day. An incredibly strong live performance two disc set which captures much of what impressed me mightily this past summer when I saw them perform outside the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.
