Did anyone watch this? SG and I tried to watch it tonight. We had to turn it off. The humor was just not what we were looking for this evening. Bashing stereotypes is not funny all the time. Maybe he was trying to make a point, but the cruel nature he chose to show it in just passed me by.

Cohen is an observant Jew and although his brand of satire is a bit harsh--it really brings out prejudice like others can't. He had a very nice interview on Fresh Air where he explains his act in great detail--unfortunately you can't get it any more. But here is a biting satire that he did--he sang a song, "Throw the Jew Down the Well". He had no idea the crowd would react like that. It's from his HBO series Aly G www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb3IMTJjzfo

I had low expectations when I saw it, but I came away singing its praises. I laughed quite hard throughout - the biting satire "spot on." I had never seen any of Cohen's work before - nor have I seen any since, but those 90 minutes or so were great. MQ

The film is so critically praised we thought we'd give it a try but frankly, we couldn't stand it. I guess I like more subtle sorts of sarcasm, this was just too over the top for me.
One of my best friends from high school hated I Love Lucy and also Laverne and Shirley. When I asked her why she told me the main characters in both shows were always getting into embarassing situations and that, in turn, made her feel embarassed for them and very uncomfortable. Maybe that was it with Borat. I'm having trouble figuring out if it was that or if I thought it was just plain stupid, haven't figured it out yet.
I also had a lot of trouble with Napolean Dynamite at first but after having seen it a couple of times I get more of the humor then I did the first time 'round.
