Tonight on cable was The Thing starring Kurt Russell. It got me thinking about remakes of movies. How do other people like it when a movie is remade? What if you really liked the original? In this example I really do like the remake. Better special effects and a more modern look to it. Still, there is something about the original that appeals to me. I can't help but watch it every time it is on tv. There were a number of movies from that time period that really stand out in spite of the effects of the time. The Thing, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Them, I could go on. I am a sucker for cheesy movies I admit Is there a movie remake that really stands out compared to the original? How about one that completely flopped? Of course there is always the why did they bother remake. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for example. I did not think the original was all that special and liked the remake even less. Can we say that cult movies should not be remade? I guess not since I thought Dawn of the Dead was even better than the original. I guess in general I would say that remakes are a bad idea. In most cases the remake is worse. Why can't people come up with original ideas? By luck or coincidence a few remakes do stand out and even surpass the original. Not often enough for my tastes though

I had to reread your post a few times to make sure you weren't dissing the remake of The Thing. Love the remake, while the original is only "meh." Maybe becasue it lacks Kurt Russell.
Remakes are interesing only when they add or update a movie. Remakes suck when they are made becasue people have run out of ideas or it's sepcfic person vanity project. Tried watching the new Dawn of the Dead the other day and got about half way through before I called it quits and went to bed. Not a bad movie, but really I've seen it before and it couldn't hold my interest.
I have been hearing rumors that they want to remake Evil Dead...without Bruce Campbell. Which to me is complete blasphmey and a really bad idea.

Remake Evil Dead?!! That's blasphemy! There are wayyyyyyy too many remakes out there. I can't believe the amount of movies coming out that are based on TV shows. Talk about running out of ideas! Are they nutz? What's the problem? Has everything been done before? Are there no topics left to tackle on the big screen?

I don't think it is necessarily a lack of original ideas so much as simple economics. It costs so much today to make a film that by the time you pay the actor's and directors salaries the budget is so high that unless the film is a success millions of dollars will be lost. Studios are just too afraid to take a chance on something new and the fear of losing tens of millions of dollars.

Personally, I don't ever recall seeing a remake of anything that I liked even nearly as much as the original.
Having said that... I should also state that I tend to watch old pictures from the silent era through to the late 1950s. In some rare cases, some 1930's/40's/50's remakes of earlier silent works are really not comparable IMO. In those cases, the remakes can be quite interesting.
I see very little in the way of movies newer than the 1950s, and the few I've seen I have not been impressed with. Too much flash and eye candy and not enough substance. Again, just my opinion.

I generally hate remakes! There are very few that live up to the original. In fact, the only ones I can think of at the moment that may have been as good or even better than the original are horror films or sci fi films. I think a lot of that has to do with the movie industry's ability to make things scarier and to include more special effects.
Acting hasn't really gotten any better, that's for damn sure....
JMHO! ;D

The remake that really MUST be done is Logan's Run. The original, although campy and cute, was nothing like the book--which was dark and sinister.

I saw Logan's Run in the theatre (yes, I'm old) and thought it was so brill then. Joe and I bought the dvd for a couple of bucks for nostalgic reasons and we laughed in some of the parts, it was so hokey! It definetly needs to be refurbished and you're right -- the book is darker. A film that doesn't need updating but unfortunately was update by its own director: Star Wars.
