Last night Shutter Girl and I watched The Punisher on dvd. I had very low expectations for the adaptation from the comic book. I will say I was surprised by it. It is not the best comic book movie, but it was much better than I thought it would be. Tom Jane did a fine job in the lead role. Both Shutter Girl and I thought he would be a good choice to play Repairman Jack from the F.Paul Wilson novels.
This got me thinking about what is the best movie adaption of a comic book or graphic novel? I guess it would come down to personal preferences--whether you think it is the best movie or the best at being true to the original comic book or graphic novel.

Who has seen Sin City? Any reactions on the success of bringing these graphic novels to the big screen? I haven't read the books, so cannot comment, though one of my sons has said the movie is unbelievably true to the novels. Interesting flick - good entertainment to my mind.

I loved Sin City, Max --- it's a real treat for the eyes. I think Rodriguez and Miller did a fantastic job with the cinematography, putting you into the graphic novel with black and white film, white blood and incredible costuming and make-up.
Yes, it's got graphic violence and is dark but it's also a glorious acheivement in filmmaking. Repairman and I were looking at the graphic novels today and I have to say that I saw some scenes that were in the film. I can't comment on the accuracy of the film vs. the novels but I can tell you that seeing the film itself was quite a ride.

Unfortunately I have not read the graphic novels so can't comment on how well the movie follows them. A friend who has read them agrees with your son MQ that they do follow them very well. The movie actually covers three separate graphic novels. I do want to go back and read all the stories now. An excellent film for those who have not seen it yet. Highly recommended

MQ I also loved Sin City, but don't expect plot. It's basically violent eye candy. Kind of a-la Kill Bill 1 although Sin City is MUCH more graphic than Kill Bill. I can take a lot of violence in movies and even I was cringing in it. It holds true to the spirit of the graphic novel.

Just saw Stardust tonight. It's an adaptation of a graphic novel and a regular novel by Neil Gaiman. They did a really good job; I highly recommend it.

Watched Iron Man on dvd recently. What a great movie! Makes me wish I would have seen it on the big screen. SG and I got it from the library and loved it so much we went out and bought it the next day.
As a side note I was sorry to read that Terrence Howard is out of the sequel. Apparently he asked for too much money so they are replacing him with Don Cheadle. I like Don as an actor but thought Terrence really played that role well.
