Are there any fans of this genre out there? Tonight Shutter Girl and I watched Vampire Princess Miyu Volume 1 and half of Volume 2 on dvd. Each dvd has two episodes (each about 20-25 minutes long). The storyline has to do with a girl vampire and her demon servant fighting the Shinma (Japanese god/demons). I thought it was very good. My favorite anime is still probably Vampire Hunter D.

I really enjoyed Vampire Princess Miyu. The references to Japanese culture were really interesting and well done and the sound quality was unusually excellent.
When I was in grad school I did a research project on the Japanese belief in ghosts, demons and superstitions using religious practices, iconography and Japanese literature (both ancient and new) as the basis for my discussion. It was one of the most interesting pieces of work I've done and watching VPM last night made me want to research it once again.

Yeah, anime and manga are both pretty good for insights into Japanese culture. I can't remeber if I've seen Vampire Princess Miyu or not. Sometimes the anime all run together.
If you Vampire Hunter D, I recommend Demon City Shunjuku. In my mind, Mephisto ranks as one of the coolest anime characters of all time...even though he does very little. The sequel to D is cool too.

Another of my favorites (although it's not Japanese) is the animated movie Wizards.

In terms of must see anime, I have to add Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress to stubedoo's list--I watch a lot of the "lighter" or more escapist stuff, but these other films listed are easily the equal of any live action drama.
