Zapoi is a new style of binge drinking in Russia which is the idea of getting unconscious as quickly as possible by means of alcohol. Whether it is related to the breakup of the Soviet Union, the decline in economic prospects or the deterioration of the health care system, Russians are binge drinking like never before.
Between 1989 and 1994 life expectancy has dropped for men by 6 years and for women by 3 years. Today a Russian man can expect to live to 58--which is the lowest life expectancy among industrial nations and is comparable with Senegal. The number 4 cause of death is accidental alcohol poisoning! Also CVD has been linked to binge drinking. Deaths from CVD (which is the number one cause of death) peak from Saturday to Monday which is when Russians binge drink.
Surprisingly Russians drink less alcohol per person than other Europeans. They do consume more spirits and drink them zapoi style which is what makes the difference. As if Russia did not have enough problems...

When I was working on my masters in history I had a professor who specialized in Russian history and had lived in Russia about a year. Whilst there, everywhere he went , be the occassion social or business, he was expected to down a substantial amount of vodka. He was tired of it after a week and there was no end in sight. It was quite seriously the driving factor for his leaving to come back to the states --- he simply couldn't binge drink anymore. With the strong booze they have you could either kill yourself or go blind quite easily!
