It's tough being a volunteer EMT, even if you happen to be Shawn Phillips: "I write this in a state of extreme glumness. We went out to do an OPL, (Out of Port Limited Operation), to pick up a seaman from a container ship that was suffering from a throat infection, and had to see a Doctor in a hospital here, and as we were approaching the vessel, because I was the medic on board, I had my 2 belts on that have my EMT gear in them, and my cellphone, and my Yeasu radio, and the coxswain told us to put the fenders out, and as I was tying the fender down, the boat pitched to the starboard side, and I grabbed the rail, but it was wet, and my hand slipped off, and I ended up in the fucking water. Needless to say, I lost a $527 radio, a $150 cellphone, and a $200 Glucosimeter, because they were all turned on, and spent the rest of the day drying all my stuff out in an oven, and trying to live down my embarrasment. The rescuers turned out to be the rescuees. " ~ Shawn Phillips, writing from his home in South Africa
