Just bought myself an ipod and it's a lot of fun. What I really like doing is downloading science-related podcasts and geeking out. Also, I've put in a couple of Tull bootlegs and the database actually recognized them.

Also, I've put in a couple of Tull bootlegs and the database actually recognized them. iPods (and their kind) are wonderful devices. I have rediscovered so much music I had in my vaults simply by putting my iPod on random and taking a listen. For frequent traveler like me, the portability of incredible amounts of music is a God-send. Interesting that a few boots were recognized. Which ones? I have recently subscribed to the podcasts of the NPR program This American Life, which has been another wonderful way to catch up on some great audio, in this case the interesting and hard to characterize product of Ira Glass and crew. RJ has asked me if I'd like an iPod for Christmas. To be honest, I'm not sure that I'd like those earbuds in my ears! Was there a period of adjustment on that front for you guys? I mean I should have one, me of all females!

I've found that every boot I've put in has been recognized. Apparantly someone has been there before me. I've had a little difficulty organizing the stuff on the ipod the way I want, but I finally got it hammered out. Calling the Apple support was actually a pleasant experience. In terms of science podcasts, here are a couple of good ones: New Scientist www.newscientist.com/podcast.nsThe Naked Scientist www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/Shows/streaming_media.htm

Oh, and I've not had any difficulty adjusting to the earbuds. I do wish they weren't white, though. You don't need earbuds--you can use any set of headphones with them.
My advice is to go to Best Buy or wherever and check out the different models. I didn't want video on my mp3 player; I wanted something very light and portable. So I got the ipod nano 8gb model. It's light and uses a flash drive chip instead of a mini hard drive like the bigger models that use video.
Go to the store, hold them in your hand, work the controls, and look at the display. Consumerreports.org has a bunch of buying advice also.
