Been listening to... In the Land of Grey and Pink by Caravan and Absent Lovers by King Crimson. Scrumptious, both of them. There's nothing like top-of-the-line prog to make a gal smile. Thanks to Stu and Kram for the delightful experience. Still in search of Martin Newell, a recommendation from my pal, Kevin. It's Andy Partridge meets Syd Barrett --- can't go wrong with that now, can you?

Well,
[glow=green,2,300]Happy St. Patty's Day[/glow] to you all!
Today we celebrated by listening to:
Altan - The First Ten Years
One of the best Celtic bands out there, a true joy.

Michael Brook, Affliction soundtrack I love guitarist and audio mastermind Michael Brook and it seems the more I discover from him, the more interesting he becomes. I've never seen the film Affliction but now that I've heard the soundtrack I've simply got to see the film! I'll let the descriptive and accurate words of the Amazon.com reviewer tell you about it: "Using electric guitars and synthesizers, Brook creates a haunting and dissonant soundscape that continues to unsettle even after the music is over." "All told, it's sinister stuff. Beautiful, but unrelenting." And delicious...

I've just started listening to Jack Johnson and I think I'm in love!
This singer/songwriter/guitarist is the closest thing to Shawn Phillips I've ever heard. His lyrics are poetry, his quitar work interesting and his voice sounds so much like a young Shawn in places it's scary. I'd love to talk to this guy and find out what makes him tick.
Check out his album Brushfire Fairytales... I think I heard a little Hey, Miss Lonely in there!
An acoustic treat.

I have to second the Jack Johnson post by Shutter Girl. Very cool stuff. We went out today and bought his latest cd In Between Dreams. A big thumbs up on this one also. I highly recommend giving it a try if you like good acoustic guitar and lyrics!

Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (Arriving Somewhere But Not Here takes you here, there, and everywhere within 12 minutes. Great tune. Worth the price of the album.)
Springsteen - Devils and Dust (Reno - a great song, among many excellent songs.)
Two very different albums. Based on my initial reaction, buy both and enjoy. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (Arriving Somewhere But Not Here takes you here, there, and everywhere within 12 minutes. Great tune. Worth the price of the album.) You're killing me, Max!! What's so sad about this is that I thought I'd do the right thing and order the cd directly from Porcupine Tree... and what happened? It was released today and here I am, sitting here waiting for it!!!! [glow=red,2,300]Oh, the humanity!![/glow]

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of the Dead. Their latest cd is Worlds Apart. Something different and yet familiar. Multiple listens is necessary to appreciate them.

I have to say that the more I'm listening to this the better I like it! You might call it a concept album only because you can't really separate the songs. Great lyrics, appropriately changing styles and fine musicians make this an album to be reckoned with. There's a small section in there somewhere that got my attention immediately --- it's A Passion Play influenced, it has to be. It's a lovely moment and one that passes quickly, so grab it while you can. Once you hear it you'll want to grab your giant white rabbit and dance away into the past.

A worthy successor to In Absentia. Same general feel and sound. They remain distinctive, yet you hear some KC at times - some early (PG era) Genesis at others - some NIN here and there - and of course, your usual Pink Floyd sensations. Shallow and Halo are loud and wonderful - surrounding the soft and quiet Lazarus. Arriving Somewhere But Not Here starts quietly, builds and builds over many minutes - suddenly a quiet interlude - and finishing with energy. It's a helluva nice ride. The title track is a powerful beginning - a chaotic dream with some peaceful sleep mingled in. I will mention again, there are a few NIN moments, which I love - and those moments make me look forward to Trent Reznor's latest, also just released (but not yet in my collection). One gripe - why insist on having "bonus tracks" with time gaps? Especially hated when the time gap is at the end of a track, so that putting that song on a compilation or your iPod becomes a pain - or you have to just put up with silence for an extended period. One reason I get frustrated as I listen to Dot Com. I'd love to share a A Gift of Roses with other folks, but... One of the worst offenders has been Cracker - who has one disc with 90+ tracks, 80 of which are silent tracks a few seconds in length - with some bonus tracks buried within. Frustrating as hell. Back to Porcupine Tree - Deadwing. It will be worth the wait. Assuming you loved In Absentia, you should feel the same about Deadwing. MQ
