Well, I've been thinking of improving this burg and wanted to get some opinions on it! If I sink some money into it we could: - have www.gravityeyelids.com as our domain name - have our very own little chatroom - have more features such as being able to upload our own avatars and attachments - have perhaps a more attractive site So... what do y'all think?

Well, gravityeyelids.com is taken by some band. I downloaded one of their songs from the website and they're actually not that bad. Whoops, the vocals just started I take it back. I'm not too big on chatrooms. I've personally found that you get a lot of conversations that are hard to follow. But each to his/her own. But I see the appeal. The other alternative is something as simple as an instant messaging program such as Windows Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. You can create buddy lists and have a defacto chat room. Avatar? Isn't that the good guy in the movie Wizards? S2

How much money? The domain name: Is there an advantage to this in any way? Wouldn't that be transparent? Chatroom: Like Stu, I am not a big fan of chatrooms. Instant messaging one-on-one is more productive and generally less confusing. I doubt I would make an effort to chat with a small group. Various attempts in the past have been less than satisfying in the end. Avatars/attachments: I'm not sure this necessarily wins me over to further investment of dollars. More attractive site: I don't come here because it is attractive. I come here for discussion/communication with a small group of friends. Isn't there a line related to this from Cold Mountain? To paraphrase (at best) - "It makes as much sense to marry for looks as it does to eat a bird because it has a pretty song." As I reflect on the above, I am quite content with the status quo and see no reason to invest more dollars. MQ

For what little it's worth...
I think the IRC platform for chats are the best for a regular group. The channels can be set up with OPS capabilities and protected against takeovers. They can also be moderated, or invite-only to prevent the riff-raff from getting in and wreaking havock. I honestly don't see the difference between a channel like that or the party-line IM thing. I don't know that much about IM programs since I don't use them anymore. The IRC format also allows logging so if anyone misses part of the conversation, they simply can scroll back to see what was said. Perhaps that can be done with IMs too.. I don't know.
At anyrate, that's my 1.5 cents' worth! lol

IRC sounds good to me, ZD! I have a couple of questions for you: 1. Can you set up an IRC channel for us? 2. Can you instruct we mere mortals on how to use it? The reason I would have liked the webboard chat is that you can see who is in the chat room. If a couple of your pals are chatting you might want to join in! The Talk Awhile chatroom is set up that way and it's kind of nice. Max, we're not talking a lot of money here. In fact, it will be no money for you lot because I'd pay for it! I might just pay for the domain name. How does www.gravityeyelids.net sound? It's not that expensive via Yahoo domains. The webboard I wanted to convert to can't convert this type of webboard for whatever reason and we'd lose all of our hard work. That'd be a dragola, wouldn't it?

I'd be happy to help you set up a channel if it turns out that people are comfortable with that platform. All that really needs to happen is to settle on an IRC server to use, and get a couple nicks registered. Feel free to email me privately if you wish and we can set it up in no time.
If people aren't thrilled about an IRC channel, that's fine too. No biggie either way, and I'll be happy to participate in any event. There's no point in trying to set something up that the folks aren't going to be happy using! lol
Let me know! Regards ZD

Jzero has had to change his nickname and sign in again in order to participate here... he now goes under a different name and can on occasion be found spurting out sporadic little idiosycratic postings of little or no relevance whatsoever (just for the sake of another little star). As for setting up a domain name, I vote for: www.kelp.comC

Excuse me, mine host, but was ProBoards upgraded? Is there something new we should marvel at with the GE hosting service? Let us know.
